We attended training with the CDI this week and as part of this heard from Start, a free online platform for schools and colleges. The site offers career planning tools and pulls LMI through from the LMI for all data platform. Definitely worth a look.
Tees Valley Job Vacancies 2017

Contact centre or call centre work is very established in the North East, however it still divides opinion on the quality of work and the opportunities it provides. ContactBabel, provides many commercial reports on the work of contact centres and its freely available headline data provides some UK context:
- There are 6,200 contact centres in the UK with 770,000 agents positions
- Outbound calls are down to 22% from 37% in 2004
- 20% of interactions are via email
- The prospects are not so good as it is anticipated that many contact centres will close through the increase in automation and self-service .
There is an opportunity to hear more about the contact centre business at a CPD event on the 18th September at the Barclays Bank contact centre in Sunderland. There are limited places, but if you are interested, contact Madeleine Liddell at firstname.lastname@example.org
Drop in North East employment levels
Estimates from the Labour Force Survey show that for the period March to May 2018:
- for the UK, there were 32.40 million people in work, 137,000 more than for the previous quarter and 388,000 more than for a year earlier.
- for the North East there were 1.2 million people in work, 30,000 fewer than last quarter and 25,00 fewer than for a year earlier
- unemployment was down to 61,000 in the North East - a new low
No certainty as to why the NE would have seen the fall (the only other region with a small reduction was the East Midlands) in employment. it's possible that the latest round of retail closures has hit this region disproportionately?
As part of the quarterly update of the Annual Population Survey, ONS releases figures on employment levels by occupation for the UK and regions. The top 10 in the North East are shown in the table below. Don't take the numbers to be precise but they are a good indicator of the size and position.
